A simple explanation about search engines.
Search Engine Index Servers
1. The web server sends the search query from search computer to the index servers. The information inside the index servers is same to the index in the back of a book - it tells which pages contain the words or letters that match the search query.

2.The query sends to the doc servers, which actually retrieve the cached(Except fresh content) documents. Bit of information generated to describe each link in search results.

3.The search results are returned to the user computer's browser in a fraction of a second.
In the above process search engines provide results based on Quality of websites.
